Peluang Indonesia menjadi tuan rumah Piala Dunia (PD) disebut-sebut buyar, setelah Ritz Carlton dan JW Marriott jadi sasaran pengeboman para teroris. Meski peluangnya menipis, berbagai pihak menyebutkan usaha tersebut masih bisa diperjuangkan.
Bersama 10 negara kompetitor lainnya, Indonesia secara resmi sudah mengajukan lamaran untuk menjadi tuan rumah Piala Dunia 2018 atau 2022. Negara negara tersebut adalah Inggris, Rusia, Spanyol-Portugal, Belanda-Belgia, Australia, Jepang, Korea Selatan, Qatar, Amerika Serikat, dan Meksiko.
Meski mengakui kansnya kecil, Adhyaksa Dault, Menteri Negara Pemuda dan Olahraga mengatakan kalau perjuangan untuk menwujudkan ambisi tersebut belum berakhir.
Untuk wujudkan ambisi itu, PSSI melakukan berbagai usaha pendekatan kepada berbagai federasi sepakbola benua lainnya untuk memperoleh dukungan. Usaha ini berbuah hasil baik. Berbagai pihak menyampaikan simpati dan dukungannya kepada Indonesia.
Setelah mendapat dukungan dari Mohamed bin Hammam, Presiden AFC (Federasi Sepakbola Asia), Indonesia kembali mendapat dukungan dari Presiden CONMEBOL (Federasi Sepakbola Amerika Latin), Leoz Nicolas.
Nicolas berjanji untuk terus menyuarakan dukungan CONMEBOL dalam pencalonan Indonesia tersebut, termasuk dengan melobi anggota-anggota Exco FIFA lainnya.
Dukungan dari Presiden CONMEBOL ini didapat setelah Ketua Umum PSSI, Nurdin Halid beserta pengurus lainnya melakukan road show ke Amerika Latin.
“Presiden CONMEBOL menganggap Indonesia sangat pantas untuk diberi kesempatan untuk menjadi tuan rumah Piala Dunia 2022 itu, karena memiliki sejarah sepakbola yang panjang. Mereka sangat apresiatif dengan pencalonan kita,” ungkap Nurdin, kemarin (9/9) dari Ascuncion, Paraguay. (dtk/pf/ika)
